JAKARTA – ISA Art Gallery recently announced that Sinta Tantra earned a spot as a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2026. This award stands as one of the most prestigious honors for contemporary art in the region. She brings a unique perspective to the competition because of her diverse background. She was born in New York to Balinese parents and grew up in London. Consequently, her transnational experiences shape her creative practice. She explores the relationships between color, light, and intersecting geometry in her vibrant works.
A Career Built on Global Success
Tantra studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Since then, she has showcased her talent at major international events like the Liverpool Biennial and the Karachi Biennale. Many famous institutions also hold her pieces in their permanent collections. For instance, her art resides within Museum MACAN and the Government Art Collection in the UK. Even the Louis Vuitton Collection includes her distinctive creations. Her selection this year highlights her status as a leading figure in the modern art world.
Standing Out Among International Talent
The judges chose Tantra’s work from a pool of 250 entries. This year’s list features 30 finalists from 12 different countries and regions. Therefore, the competition reflects a wide variety of contemporary styles and practices. ISA Art Gallery noted that this achievement places Tantra among a very strong group of international creators. Furthermore, this nomination marks a significant milestone in her ongoing connection with global audiences. Her presence in the finals reinforces the growing influence of Indonesian artists on the world stage.
The Beauty of the Red Series
The nominated piece carries the title From The Red Series: In My Memory for Life. This specific work belongs to her “Red Series,” which features organic shapes and fluid movements. Tantra uses high luminosity to bring these forms to life on the canvas. She displays expert skill by using tempera on linen along with 24-carat gold leaf. Most of her compositions focus on repeating circular shapes. These circles evoke thoughts of natural cycles, stars, and deep meditative states.
Upcoming Exhibitions in Hong Kong
Art lovers can view the finalists’ works during two public exhibitions in Hong Kong. The first show runs from April 24 to May 3 at H Queen’s. Following that, the exhibition moves to the Phillips Asia headquarters in the West Kowloon Cultural District from May 12 to May 15. These events offer a rare chance for the public to see Tantra’s masterpiece in person. Meanwhile, the art community eagerly awaits the final results of the prize. Tantra continues to inspire others through her mastery of light and form.
