JOGJAKARTA – ARTJOG functions as a vital meeting space for new ideas in art and creativity. This festival shares aesthetic experiences and the latest artistic developments with the public. PT ARTJOG MATRA NUSANTARA manages this event to facilitate cutting-edge artistic processes. The organizers present fine art exhibitions alongside various educational programs. These initiatives offer fresh experiences to every visitor. The art festival actively dissolves the boundaries between artistic practice and interpretation. It also nurtures strong networks among artists, markets, policymakers, and the public.
Philosophy Behind the Masterpiece
The official ARTJOG website cites a profound philosophical foundation for its upcoming themes. The organizers draw inspiration from the Latin aphorism:
“Vīta brevis, ars longa, occāsiō praeceps, experīmentum perīculōsum, iūdicium difficile.”
As stated on an curatorial presentations four months ago, curator Farah Wardani identifies this quote as a famous teaching from the ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates. The phrase literally means “Art is long, life is short.” Art lovers and philosophers frequently reflect on this statement regarding human existence. This aphorism highlights the contrast between limited human life and the enduring nature of creative work. Human knowledge and art maintain a deep continuity within humanity itself.
The Long Art Trilogy Concept
ARTJOG adopts the concept of ‘Ars Longa Trilogia’ for its 2026–2028 seasons. This title represents the “Trilogy of Long Art.” The curatorial team interprets this concept as a firm belief in art as a way of life. Art remains relevant throughout the entire history of human civilization. Artists constantly find new relevance as they adapt to the changing times. Art integrates itself into human life through its ability to provide meaning within social, cultural, and political contexts.
The year 2026 opens the first part of the trilogy with the theme: Ars Longa: Generatio (Generations). This theme explores the meaning of art for new generations through intergenerational dialogue. Generatio promotes a dialogical and interdisciplinary approach among creators. The festival rejects hierarchical labels such as Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and Alpha. It looks beyond the use of young generations as mere market targets or algorithmic data. The artists instead address the relevance of fine arts within Indonesian and global social contexts. They respond to ongoing socio-political challenges and historical readings through their work.
Collaborative and Individual Practices
The segment Generatio: Dialogus prioritizes collaborative projects between different age groups. Many contemporary artists now expand their roles as movement initiators, curators, and educators. These figures act as mentors and partners for younger creators within their established networks. Dialogus invites selected artists to respond to the theme by collaborating with one or more partners. Another segment, Generatio: Prāctica, showcases individual works from diverse artists. These creators represent the current spirit of the times through various media. They tackle urgent issues such as decolonization, technology, digital realms, and ecology.
The Gateway to a Major Milestone
CEO Heri Pemad emphasizes that 2026 serves as the gateway to ARTJOG’s 20th anniversary in 2027. He strategically appointed Farah Wardani as the lead curator due to her expertise in archives and art history. Bambang Toko will assist her in managing this ambitious vision. ARTJOG 2026 positions itself as the “Lebaran Seni Rupa” (Eid of Fine Arts). The event transcends Yogyakarta’s borders to become a hub for cultural diplomacy. The festival will run from June 19 to August 30, 2026, at the Jogja National Museum (JNM). More informations at www.artjog.id.
