JAKARTA – Indonesian cinema steps into a bold new era as Studio Manara releases its latest epic feature, Pasukan 1000 Janda (Army of 1000 Widows). Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Archie Hekagery and produced by Yuda Wirafianto together with Bunga Mentari, this historical action-fantasy film brings one of Indonesia’s most fierce historical narratives into contemporary pop culture. The feature film will hit theaters nationwide on November 12, 2026.
The Story: Rising from Grief to Glory
The movie centers on the historic Inong Balee, an all-female military unit formed during the Aceh War. These brave women tragically lost their husbands on the battlefield. Instead of giving up to grief, they chose to rise up, train fiercely, and pick up weapons to defend their homeland.
Leading this formidable army stands Laksamana Malahayati, historical records recognize her as the world’s first female navy admiral. Under her visionary command, the widows transformed into an elite military force that defied colonizers and reshaped maritime history.
Bringing History into Modern Pop Culture
During a press conference at EPICENTRUM XXI Kuningan, Jakarta, director Archie Hekagery shared his creative passion for the project. He emphasized that history becomes far more engaging and memorable for younger generations when filmmakers weave it into popular culture.
“Through this film, I want to leave a lasting legacy for Indonesian children so they can learn about our national heroes with excitement,” Archie explained. “Additionally, we hope the success of this movie opens wider doors for Indonesian filmmakers to tell more rich historical stories.”
To deliver high-octane martial arts sequences, the production team invited international action star Ron Smoorenburg. Consequently, the movie blends deep dramatic performances with tight, world-class combat choreography.
A Visually Stunning Cinematic Experience
The newly released trailer showcases breathtaking battle scenes set across land and sea. Armed with traditional rencong daggers and advanced martial arts, the women of Inong Balee fearlessly charge against colonial warships equipped with heavy artillery cannons.
The film stars a talented ensemble cast that brings these historical figures to life. Leading actress Atiqah Hasiholan plays the role of Laksamana Malahayati, while Cut Mini portrays Maisaroh. In addition, Tasha Siahaan acts as Dahlia, and international action star Ron Smoorenburg joins the main cast. The cast also features strong performances from Ully Triani, Fergie Brittany, Vincent Verhaag, and young actor Muzakki Ramadhan.
Ultimately, Pasukan 1000 Janda promises a powerful cinematic journey—celebrating women’s empowerment, resilience, and the relentless fight for freedom.
