JAKARTA – Sankhara, Meiro Gallery, and Kendy’s Gallery host The Stage at K Mall, North Jakarta. This contemporary art exhibition runs from March 18 to April 12, 2026. Visitors discover 39 diverse sculptures and paintings from ten local and international artists. The organizers place these artworks along the mall’s corridors. This layout creates an intimate art experience within a daily public setting.
Emotional Intensity in Contemporary Sculpture
Andre Tanama captures the audience’s attention with his striking sculpture titled Fearless. The piece depicts a young child locked in a fierce struggle with a dragon. Both figures grip each other with intense, dynamic movement. Tanama introduces a new character named Agathos for this specific work. Agathos represents a significant shift from his previous spiritual character, Gwen Silent. This new figure displays a more aggressive and emotional temperament. Tanama describes Agathos as a form of “goodness” that reacts with necessary intensity.
Redefining Beauty and Humor
Adi Gunawan challenges traditional beauty standards through his playful sculptural works. His piece The Mondrian Lady portrays a voluptuous woman reclining with vibrant, contrasting colors. He reinterprets the iconic Mona Lisa with a witty, defiant twist. He also draws inspiration from Piet Mondrian’s signature geometric style for this creation. His other work, Kejar Daku Kau Kugigit, features three stout women running from a bulldog. This large-scale sculpture uses a comical tone to engage the viewers.
Reimagining Global Pop Culture Icons
Several artists in the exhibition utilize famous pop culture imagery to convey new meanings. Arkiv Vilmansa presents Mickiv Hope Golden Age by drawing inspiration from Mickey Mouse. He emphasizes the character’s round head and wide ears through various expressive poses. Similarly, the artist Ndikol reimagines Astro Boy in his work Heart Rebellion Color XL. This version of the character wears a bandana and sports a confrontational expression. Ndikol also applies this rebellious style to The Simpsons and Richie Rich in his mixed media series.
Bringing Fine Art into the Public Eye
Kenny Yustana, the founder of Meiro Gallery, views The Stage as a vital milestone for the art community. He believes the exhibition successfully bridges the gap between private galleries and public spaces. The mall environment allows artists to shine brighter under the gaze of a broader audience. Passersby interact with high-quality art during their routine shopping trips. This initiative encourages people to witness and appreciate contemporary creativity more closely.
