HONG KONGThe Sovereign Asian Art Prize recently announced its 30 finalists for 2026. This prestigious competition celebrates the very best of contemporary art across Asia. This year marks the 22nd edition of the event, and the list includes several talented artists from Indonesia.

A large group of 145 artists submitted over 250 unique artworks for consideration. Independent professionals and art galleries nominated these creators for the prize. A distinguished panel of judges reviewed the entries carefully. This year’s team includes Museum Director David Elliott and last year’s winner, Arpita Akhanda. Curator Manray Hsu and Asia Art Archive Executive Director Özge Ersoy also helped select the finalists.

Big Prizes on the Horizon

The judges will travel to Hong Kong to view the final artworks in person. They will award a Grand Prize of $30,000 to the top artist. Additionally, one female artist will receive the Vogue Hong Kong Women’s Art Prize worth $5,000. Members of the public can also participate in the excitement. People can vote for their favorite piece to help an artist win the $1,000 Public Vote Prize.

Reflecting Modern Realities

David Elliott, the chair of the judges, praised the high quality of this year’s entries. He noted that the collection successfully captures the feeling of our current world. However, he also mentioned that some countries could not participate. Ongoing wars and political sanctions prevented certain artists from joining the competition this year. Despite these challenges, the shortlist represents a wide range of styles from 12 different countries.

Indonesian Talent Takes the Stage

Indonesian artists occupy a significant spot on the 2026 shortlist. Citra Sasmita, a Balinese artist, presents a beautiful piece titled Poetry of the Fountain. She uses acrylic paint on traditional Kamasan canvas for her work. Filippo Sciascia also joins the finalists with his piece Tablet (1). Furthermore, Sinta Tantra showcases her artistic vision through a work called In My Memory for Life. These artists bring a unique Indonesian perspective to the international stage.
