JAKARTA – The Ministry of Law of Indonesia now provides a completely free service for people who want to register their copyright. The government applies this groundbreaking rule based on Article 40 of the 2014 Copyright Law. Therefore, creators no longer need to pay any money to protect their hard work. During a television news broadcast on Monday, October 26, 2026, the Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, announced nineteen different categories that qualify for this free service.
First, the policy covers books, pamphlets, layout designs, and all other written works. Furthermore, the government includes speeches, lectures, and similar spoken presentations. Next, creators can also register educational teaching tools without any cost. In addition, the rule protects songs and music, whether they have lyrics or not. Moreover, this free service applies to plays, musical dramas, dances, choreography, puppet shows, and pantomimes.
The Ministry also accepts all forms of fine art, such as paintings, drawings, carvings, calligraphy, sculptures, and collages. Likewise, people can register applied arts and architectural designs for free. Subsequently, the policy includes maps and traditional batik designs or other similar patterns. Photographers will also benefit from this rule because it strictly covers photography. As a result, journalists and people who enjoy taking photos can easily protect their pictures. Furthermore, the government includes portraits and movies in this free category.
In addition, the law protects new items that creators transform from other sources. For example, people can register translations, interpretations, adaptations, collections, databases, and musical arrangements. Similarly, creators can register modified versions of traditional cultural expressions. Moreover, the policy applies to collections of original works or data in any media format. Finally, the government includes video games and computer programs in the comprehensive list.
