SURABAYA – Galeri Merah Putih (GMP) presents a compelling exhibition titled Art for Freedom in Surabaya. This event serves as a vibrant space for public expression and collective resistance. The exhibition runs from April 1 to April 8, 2026. It showcases 34 paintings that trigger public responses regarding the planned eviction of galleries within the Balai Pemuda complex. Visitors witness a direct visual protest against the city’s administrative decisions.
Art For Freedom Preserving the Spirit of Balai Pemuda
The Chairman of the Sanggar Merah Putih Foundation, M. Anis, explains the origins of this collection. Many featured works emerged from a collaborative painting session focused on the Balai Pemuda building. The artists now reintroduce these pieces to highlight the ongoing polemic. They utilize their canvases to communicate criticism and maintain their freedom of expression. This creative approach allows them to voice aspirations without taking to the streets.
A Crucial Hub for Regional Artists
Artists from Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Gresik, and Madura contribute their talents to this showcase. The gallery functions as a vital platform for regional creators to enter the urban art scene. Anis describes GMP as the smallest gallery in Indonesia with the busiest schedule in the country. Participants gain immense pride from exhibiting their work in Surabaya. These exhibitions significantly enhance their professional portfolios and artistic reputation.
The Heartbeat of Surabaya’s Art Scene
A 74-year-old visitor named Yoman expresses deep disappointment regarding the government’s eviction plan. The decision affects three key institutions: the Gallery of Dewan Kesenian Surabaya (Surabaya Arts Council Gallery), GMP, and Bengkel Muda Surabaya (BMS). He has followed the local art scene since moving from Ambon to Surabaya in 2000. He regularly enjoys the diverse cultural activities held at Balai Pemuda. He believes that the arts community makes the city feel alive and vibrant.
Yoman often treats Balai Pemuda as a primary source of inspiration for his own paintings. He spends hours observing the artworks to gain new knowledge and perspectives. He hopes the authorities cancel the eviction to save the local creative soul. Many enthusiasts share his sentiment and value the gallery as a sanctuary for learning. The Art for Freedom exhibition continues to draw people who stand in solidarity with the artists.
