JAKARTA – The Jakarta Provincial Government actively prepares Fatahillah Square in the Kota Tua (Old Town) area as a primary center for art and cultural expression. This initiative strengthens the area’s Dutch colonial architectural identity to celebrate Jakarta’s 500th anniversary in 2027. Denny Aputra, the Head of the Old Town Management Unit, plans to maximize the square’s function as a lively and inclusive public space. Consequently, the government will enhance the historic character of the area to attract more visitors.
Improving Visitor Comfort and Accessibility
The revitalization project focuses on more than just visual aesthetics because visitor comfort remains a top priority. For this reason, the government will add more green open spaces and rearrange the area layout. These changes will create a more friendly environment for both local citizens and international tourists. Furthermore, Vice Governor Rano Karno currently leads the revitalization team to finalize the master plan for this massive development.
A Systematic Approach to Heritage Preservation
Each working group has already developed specific action plans covering infrastructure, the creative economy, and heritage preservation. Currently, the team integrates these individual plans to ensure they align with the main development concept. In addition, the government intends to expand public activities beyond Fatahillah Square to reduce overcrowding. Specifically, they will develop the Kota Intan area as a well-organized alternative public space.
Honoring History While Welcoming the Future
The provincial government carefully maintains the historic values of the Old Town throughout the renovation process. They aim to preserve the original character of the buildings and urban spaces as part of Jakarta’s cultural heritage. Therefore, the new face of the Fatahillah area will likely emerge just in time for the city’s grand celebration in 2027. This effort ensures that the local economy grows while the city honors its long and rich history.
