AMI

JAKARTA – The Ministry of Culture of Indonesia actively pushes the 2026 Anugerah Musik Indonesia Awards (AMI Awards) to serve as the main benchmark for the country’s music progress. Deputy Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha believes that the local music ecosystem currently competes on the exact same playing field as global musicians. The statpement was spoken during the live broadcast of the 2026 AMI Awards press conference on the official AMI Awards YouTube channel, which was viewed in Jakarta this afternoon.

Furthermore, platforms like Spotify and YouTube give Indonesian artists a massive opportunity to reach worldwide audiences. Therefore, local songs frequently go viral on social media and even attract major international organizations like FIFA. Giring emphasizes that the AMI Awards faithfully track this national music evolution from the classic band era to modern digital hits. Consequently, he urges the judging system to remain dynamic and adapt to new community inputs to maintain pure objectivity.

Embracing New Genres and Cultural Inclusivity

To reflect these modern trends, the AMI Foundation introduces four brand-new categories for the upcoming 2026 ceremony. These exciting additions include Produksi Musik Etno Terbaik (Best Ethno Music Production), Lagu Pesta Musik Timur (Best Eastern Party Music Song), Best Rap or Hip-hop Album, and Best Hipdut. As a result, the total number of award categories

reaches 67 this year.

Candra Darusman, the Chairman of the AMI Foundation, states that this expansion proves the organization’s strong commitment to musical inclusivity. Moreover, he notes that these new categories accurately capture the current portrait of Indonesia’s growing music scene. The foundation protects its strict neutrality as 4.000 active members cast their votes secretly online without any outside influence.

Recognizing Regional Sounds and Local Hip-hop Growth

Meanwhile, AMI categorizer Syahrani explains the specific reasoning behind these fresh genre choices. She highlights that the new Ethno category finally gives regional artists a proper space to showcase their unique blend of traditional and modern music. In addition, the Lagu Pesta Musik Timur category honors artists from Eastern Indonesia because their catchy songs now dominate the national market.

Furthermore, the committee finally separates Hip-hop into its own dedicated category because local musicians produce a massive number of rap tracks today. Previously, the awards combined Hip-hop with R&B, but the recent surge in production easily justifies a standalone award. Ultimately, the music industry will celebrate all these diverse artistic achievements during the AMI Awards peak night on November 4, 2026.
